First, use the tone generator to identify the frequency of your tinnitus. Try to find a tone that matches as close as possible and then switch to treatment mode. You will hear sets of 12 tones followed by short silences; both the tones and the silences are important parts of the treatment. The tones should be evenly distributed above and below your tinnitus' frequency.
